by Brent May

According to Governor Alejandro Murat, after a 20-year delay and the failure of the former president’s promise, a new highway will finally be completed in March next year that will significantly reduce travel time between the city of Oaxaca and the Pacific coast of the southern provinces. It’s a schedule.

The Governor announced on Wednesday that the Oaxaca-Baranca Larga-Bentanilla Highway, which connects the state capital with the popular tourist destination Puerto Escondido, will be completed by March 21, 2022.

While inspecting the construction work, Murat said the highway was 65% complete. The project will reduce travel time between Oaxaca and the coast from six hours to two and a half hours. President Lopez Obrador will visit the highway during his visit to Oaxaca on June 8, according to Murat.

Former Presidents Vicente Fox, Felipe Calderon and Enrique Peña Nieto all failed to fulfill their promise to complete the highway.

According to Murat, 1.5 billion pesos (US $ 74.8 million) have been invested in the highway section between Balan Karalga in the Central Valley region of Oaxaca and Bentanilla, a community near Puerto Escondido.

The governor said the construction of a 104-kilometer four-lane section, including six bridges and three tunnels, has created 10,000 direct and 5,500 indirect jobs, with three different companies working on the highway. I explained that. He added that the project has benefited more than 100,000 residents in 11 communities.

Municipalities through which highways pass, such as San Vicente Court Run and San Pablo Coatlan, are building new education, health and drainage infrastructure.

Murat said the completion of the highway will facilitate tourism not only in Puerto Escondido, but also in other coastal destinations such as Puerto Angel, Mazunte and Huatulco.
