Home Beaches Telchac Puerto Telchac Puerto by Brent May March 15, 2023 by Brent May 75 Located 44 kms to the east of Puerto Progreso and 69 kms north-east of Merida, Telchac Puerto is a quiet fishing village of about 2000 people with a busy wharf on weekends. If you’re looking for a nice outing, a “real” fishing village experience, Telchac is a great place to visit. Telchac Puerto has sandy roads with people cruising around on bikes, motos and tricycles. Catch a ride with a tricycle cab to take a spin around town. Telchac’s beaches are calm, safe for swimming, and not crowded. The fishing boats are found at the port similar to Celestún, Sisal, Progreso, San Crisanto and Río Lagartos. You’ll find a boardwalk with some artisans selling their handicrafts. Spend the day walking on the beach, fishing on the pier and swimming in the calm, turquoise waters. You’ll find the Museo del Mar with exhibits on regional marine fossils, snails and starfish. You will also find a photo exhibit with photos from Hurricanes Isidoro and Gilberto. Combine the trip with a visit to Xtampú, the pink salt lagoons and Xcambó, an amazing archaeological site just 5 kms away. You can also visit the nearby mangroves of San Crisanto or take a kayak tour at the entrance to Telchac Puerto at Sayachalttún. Have lunch at Telchac with traditional seafood or fish dishes in one of the many local restaurants or find other options including Asian food, burgers, pizza, etc. Put together a picnic and head over to the beach. You’ll find the local market close to Telchac’s plaza, open from 7-2 and a bakery, open from 3:30 on. Head to the port to buy the catch of the day. Be sure to head out for the day. A great sample of what the Yucatan offers, there’s plenty to enjoy in and around Telchac. 0 FacebookTwitterPinterestEmail Brent May Brent May is the GM and Founder of Mexico Living.
